Houses sank, gardens collapsed and schools disappeared, swept away by unprecedented erosion. A few inhabitants are clinging on in the Amazon Delta and rebuilding a little further inland, but most are now hoping only for “God’s help”. Climate change and rising sea levels are at the root of the chaos, but recent local agricultural and industrial choices have also precipitated the catastrophe.
