Climate change caused by human activity, such as the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation, poses a serious threat to the Amazon. The largest tropical forest can absorb more CO2, but this capacity is limited. Although CO2 can temporarily stimulate tree growth, other factors such as changes in rainfall, rising temperatures and loss of biodiversity could reduce this capacity in the long term.
To assess the resilience of this unique biodiversity, a team of researchers is launching the AmazonFACE (Free-Air CO2 Enrichment in the Amazon) project, an international study that could transform our understanding of the Amazon.
